Populus trichocarpa, also known as black cottonwood, western balsam-poplar, or California poplar, is a deciduous broadleaf tree native to western North America. It is grown commercially for timber and is widely used as a model organism in plant biology research. Each spring the tree releases large amounts of cottony fluff that carries its seeds.
