Alstonia scholaris

Flowering Plants

Alstonia scholaris, commonly called the blackboard tree, scholar tree, milkwood or devil's tree, is an evergreen tree in the oleander and frangipani family Apocynaceae. Its natural range runs from Pakistan to China and south to northern Australia. The tree is toxic but has traditionally been used for a wide range of ailments, and in India it is called Saptaparna and regarded as the sacred tree of the second Jain tirthankar, Ajitnatha. It was first described by Linnaeus in 1767 under the name Echites scholaris.
