A short-lived herbaceous perennial native to Europe, western Asia and northwest Africa, naturalized across temperate North and South America and Australasia. It grows twenty to eighty centimeters tall, with three-lobed leaves marked by a pale crescent and dense clusters of dark pink flowers, cultivated varieties growing substantially larger than wild plants. It thrives in meadows and grasslands and is widely grown as a fodder crop and green manure for its nitrogen-fixing ability, while its flowers and leaves are also eaten and used in traditional and cosmetic preparations, and it is an important resource for pollinators.
