Anopheles gambiae

Anopheles gambiae is part of a complex of at least seven morphologically indistinguishable mosquito species in the genus Anopheles, recognized in the 1960s. The complex includes the most important vectors of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly of the most dangerous malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, and is considered one of the most efficient malaria vectors known. It also transmits Wuchereria bancrofti, the parasite that causes lymphatic filariasis, a condition whose symptoms include elephantiasis.
