Abies forrestii

Conifers and Other Gymnosperms

Abies forrestii, or Forrest's fir, is a species of conifer in the pine family Pinaceae, endemic to the mountains of southwestern China, and named for the Scottish botanist George Forrest, who discovered it for western science in Yunnan province. It typically grows to about 20 meters tall, with needles 1.5 to 4 centimeters long and purplish, brown or black cones 7 to 12 centimeters long, and its morphology varies enough that several of its recognized varieties are sometimes treated as separate species. It grows in mixed mountain forests alongside species such as Picea likiangensis, Larix potaninii, Tsuga dumosa and Betula albosinensis, often dominating the canopy of rhododendron woodlands, and is used commercially for construction timber and pulp; the IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
