The European silver fir, Abies alba, is a species of fir native to the mountains of Europe, ranging from the Pyrenees through the Alps and Carpathians to the Balkans and Greece, with additional populations extending from southwestern France north to Normandy. It was historically one of the most important timber and Christmas tree species in central Europe, though populations in parts of its range suffered pollution-related decline during the twentieth century.
