White Spruce is a large spruce native to the boreal forest of North America, ranging across Canada and Alaska and extending south into the northern United States. It is a cone shaped evergreen tree typically 15 to 30 meters tall, with bluish green, four angled needles that emit a distinctive, sometimes unpleasant odor when crushed, giving rise to regional common names such as Skunk Spruce. White Spruce is one of the dominant tree species of the North American boreal forest and is economically important for lumber and pulpwood production. It is highly cold tolerant, capable of surviving some of the coldest winter temperatures endured by any tree species on the continent.
