Mudpuppy, scientifically Necturus maculosus, is a fully aquatic salamander in the family Proteidae, native to the eastern United States and Canada. As an amphibian with external gill slits it is often used for dissection in comparative anatomy classes, and it has the largest range of any fully aquatic salamander in North America.
