Grass Snake

Reptiles

The grass snake is a non-venomous snake widespread across Europe and parts of western Asia, most often found near ponds, streams, and wetlands where it hunts amphibians such as frogs and newts. It is a strong swimmer and will readily take to water in pursuit of prey or to escape danger. When threatened and unable to flee, the grass snake often plays dead, flipping onto its back with its mouth open and tongue lolling out, sometimes releasing a foul-smelling substance to further discourage a predator from continuing an attack.
