Apis dorsata, known as the giant honey bee or rock bee, is a honey bee species native to South and Southeast Asia. Individual bees measure 17 to 20 millimeters long and build large, exposed single-comb nests high on tree limbs, cliff overhangs, and buildings rather than nesting in cavities. The species is undomesticated and defends its nests aggressively, but has long been harvested by indigenous communities for honey and beeswax through traditional honey hunting. Its range covers the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, with its largest populations in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, though its historical populations in the Philippines have declined sharply with deforestation.
