Mirabilis jalapa

Mirabilis jalapa, called the marvel of Peru or the four o clock flower, is the most commonly grown ornamental species of Mirabilis and is available in a range of flower colors. Its name combines the Latin word for wonderful with Jalapa, the state capital of Veracruz in Mexico, and it is believed to have been cultivated by the Aztecs for medicinal and ornamental purposes before arriving in Europe in 1525. Its flowers typically open in late afternoon or at dusk, produce a strong sweet fragrance through the night, and close again in the morning, giving the plant its common four o clock name.
