Oscar (fish)

The oscar (Astronotus ocellatus), also known as the tiger oscar, velvet cichlid or marble cichlid, is a cichlid species native to tropical South America, where it also appears in local markets as a food fish. It has spread to India, China, Australia and the United States through the ornamental fish trade and remains popular in aquariums across Europe and the Americas. It was originally described in 1831 as Lobotes ocellatus and mistaken for a marine species before later being reassigned to the genus Astronotus, and it is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
