The coast redwood is the only living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae and is the tallest living tree species on Earth, reaching as much as 116.22 meters, with a trunk up to 8.9 meters across and thick, fire-resistant, fibrous bark that can be 35 centimeters deep. It can live 1,200 to 2,200 years or more and grows in a narrow coastal strip about 750 kilometers long and 8 to 75 kilometers wide from Monterey County, California north into southwestern Oregon, though logging beginning around the 1850s greatly reduced its original range of about 810,000 hectares. The tallest known living specimen, named Hyperion, holds the current height record, and the species is listed as endangered.
