Alderflies are insects of the family Sialidae in the order Megaloptera, related to the larger dobsonflies but generally smaller and darker in color. Their aquatic larvae live in the sediment of streams and ponds for one to two years before crawling onto land to pupate, and the short-lived, weak-flying adults are usually found near the water bodies where they developed.
