The Cape ghost frog is endemic to the mountain streams of South Africa's Cape fold belt, family Heleophrynidae, where it clings to wet rock faces beside fast flowing water using large adhesive toe discs and a flattened body. Its tadpoles have a large sucker like mouth that lets them hold fast against the current while grazing algae from rocks.
