Date Palm

The date palm is a flowering plant in the palm family Arecaceae, native to the region stretching from the Gulf states to the lower Indus valley. It is cultivated across northern Africa, the Middle East, southern Europe, and parts of Asia, Australia and the Americas for its sweet edible fruit, the date, and has become naturalized in many tropical and subtropical regions. It is the type species of the genus Phoenix, which includes a dozen or more other wild date palm species.
