Pseudogymnoascus destructans is a psychrophilic, cold-loving fungus that causes white-nose syndrome, a fatal disease that has devastated bat populations in parts of the United States and Canada. It grows very slowly on artificial media and cannot grow above about 20 degrees Celsius, thriving instead in the four-to-twenty-degree range found in winter bat hibernacula, and phylogenetic study has placed it in the family Pseudeurotiaceae.
