Elateridae

Elateridae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera commonly known as click beetles. The family was formally described by William Elford Leach in 1815 and contains roughly 9,300 known species worldwide, of which about 965 occur in North America. Click beetles are named for a spine on the prosternum that snaps into a notch on the mesosternum, producing a sharp click that can flip the beetle into the air; their larvae are known as wireworms and are significant agricultural pests.
