Lucanidae

Lucanidae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera commonly known as stag beetles. The family contains about 1,200 species divided among four subfamilies, Aesalinae, Lampriminae, Lucaninae and Syndesinae, and dates in the fossil record to the Middle Jurassic. Most species reach about 5 centimeters in length, though some exceed 12 centimeters, and the English name comes from the large mandibles of the males, which resemble the antlers of a stag.
