Notodontidae

Notodontidae is a family of moths commonly called prominents, comprising approximately 3,800 known species and first formally described by James Francis Stephens in 1829. The family is distributed worldwide with its greatest diversity in the tropics, particularly the New World, and members typically have heavy bodies and long wings held folded over the back, usually in muted grey or brown tones except for the brightly colored subfamily Dioptinae. Its common name comes from a tuft of raised hair on the trailing edge of the forewing, visible when the moth is at rest, which also gives the family its scientific name, meaning back tooth. Some species, including the puss moth and members of the genus Furcula, are known as kittens for their hairy, cat-like appearance, and adults of the family generally do not feed.
