Insect Orders

The taxonomic orders of the class Insecta, the six-legged arthropods with a body divided into head, thorax and abdomen. Covers every order-rank taxon entity in this atlas identified by its own sourced description as an insect order under the standard entomological classification ITIS and the Catalogue of Life both follow, from the large familiar orders such as Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera through small relict orders such as Grylloblattodea and Zoraptera. Excludes every other arthropod class, such as the arachnids (spiders, scorpions, mites and their relatives), the horseshoe crabs and the crustaceans, which are grouped under Other Invertebrate Orders instead.
