Bombardier beetles are ground beetles in the family Carabidae, in the subfamilies Brachininae or Paussinae, comprising more than 500 species altogether. They are most notable for the defense mechanism that gives them their name: when disturbed, they eject a hot, noxious chemical spray from glands at the tip of the abdomen with an audible popping sound.
