It ranks among the largest bamboo species in the world, growing in clumps of closely packed hollow stems called culms that typically reach about 30 meters tall, though one specimen in Arunachal Pradesh, India reached 42 meters; culms can be up to 28 centimeters thick. Under favorable conditions it grows extraordinarily fast, with recorded growth of up to 46 centimeters in 24 hours and reports of as much as a meter in a single day.
