The Cephalocarida are a class within the subphylum Crustacea comprising only 12 known species. Both their nauplius larvae and adults are benthic, living on the sea floor, and they were first discovered in 1955 by Howard L. Sanders. Commonly called horseshoe shrimp, they have been grouped together with the Remipedia in the clade Xenocarida, and nearly all cephalocaridans are considered to belong to a single family, Hutchinsoniellidae. Fossil cephalocaridans have been found at the Ordovician-age Castle Bank site.
