Latrodectus geometricus

Arachnids

Latrodectus geometricus, commonly known as the brown widow, brown button spider or grey widow among other names, is one of the widow spiders in the genus Latrodectus, in the family Theridiidae. It is slightly smaller and lighter colored than the black widow spiders, ranging from tan to dark brown or black, with black and white geometric patterning on the dorsal side of its abdomen, striped legs, and an orange or yellowish hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. Its egg sacs are distinctive, covered in pointed projections resembling a sandspur. Believed to have originated in Africa or South America, it now has a cosmopolitan distribution including the Americas, the Middle East, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Japan, China, Papua New Guinea, Australia and Hawaii; although its bite is painful, it is not considered dangerous, and the South African National Biodiversity Institute lists it as Least Concern.
