Hawaiian tree fern, known locally as hapu'u, Cibotium glaucum, is a tree fern of the family Cibotiaceae endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, forming a prominent component of the understory in wet native forests. It develops a thick, fibrous trunk that can reach several meters in height, and the soft golden hairs once covering its unfurling fiddleheads were historically harvested and exported in the nineteenth century as a stuffing material for pillows and mattresses before synthetic alternatives replaced the trade.
