Whip scorpions belong to the clade Thelyphonida, which consists of two arachnid orders, Uropygi, the whip scorpions proper, and Schizomida; some sources use the name Thelyphonida to refer only to the whip scorpions. They are mostly small arachnids, and the last segment of the abdomen bears a whip-like tail, or flagellum, that is shorter in Schizomida than in Uropygi. They walk on only six of their eight legs, using the front pair for sensing rather than walking, and they are not venomous.
