An order represented today only by the elephants, mammals defined by a long, muscular, prehensile trunk formed from the fused nose and upper lip, and by tusks that are enlarged, continuously growing incisor teeth. Proboscidea was once far more diverse, including the extinct mammoths and mastodons.
