The taxonomic families of the class Mammalia, the vertebrates whose females produce milk and whose bodies are typically covered in hair or fur. Covers every family-rank taxon entity in this atlas identified by its own sourced description as a mammalian family under the standard mammalian classification (Wilson and Reeder's Mammal Species of the World, the scheme ITIS and the Catalogue of Life both follow), from the rodent families such as Muridae and Sciuridae and the bat families such as Vespertilionidae and Pteropodidae through the primate families such as Hominidae and Cercopithecidae, the carnivoran families such as Felidae, Canidae and Ursidae, and the marsupial families such as Macropodidae and Dasyuridae. A member is placed here by its own sourced description identifying it as a mammalian family, never by name pattern alone. Excludes every family of bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, insect, other invertebrate, plant, fungus or microorganism, each grouped under its own sibling subcategory.
