Covers every genus-rank taxon entity in this atlas identified by its own sourced description as a bacterial or archaeal genus under the standard bacteriological classification, the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature, LPSN, and the Catalogue of Life, among them the ultra-small archaeal genus Microcaldus. Also covers a small number of extinct, microscopic fossil genera whose own sourced description identifies them as microorganisms without assigning a specific eukaryote or animal affinity, such as Avannacystis and Parakaryon, pending a fuller split when the atlas's microbial taxonomy deepens; a genus whose own sourced description states its biological affinity is unresolved, rather than identifying it as a microorganism outright, is left unplaced and reported instead of being forced here.
