Apis mellifera cecropia

Apis mellifera cecropia, known as the Greek bee, is a subspecies of the western honey bee native to southern Greece and southern Albania, first described by Kiesenwetter in 1860. It closely resembles the Italian bee and is valued by beekeepers for its gentle temperament and low tendency to swarm. The subspecies is suited to warm Mediterranean conditions and cannot survive the cooler climate of northern Europe, so it is rarely kept outside its native southern Greek range.
