The American cockroach is a large, reddish-brown cockroach species, believed to have originated in Africa despite its common name, and now found in warm, humid environments around the world, particularly common in and around buildings, sewers and other artificial structures in many cities. It is one of the largest common cockroach species, capable of growing to around five centimetres in length, and it can fly short distances, though it more often runs rapidly using its long legs to escape threats or light. American cockroaches are omnivorous scavengers that will eat almost any organic material, including decaying plant matter, other insects and human food waste, and their tolerance for a wide range of conditions, along with a rapid reproductive rate, has made them one of the most successful and persistent household pests in warm climates. Though it is generally not considered dangerous to handle directly, the species can spread bacteria and allergens picked up while foraging in unsanitary environments, contributing to its long-standing reputation as an unwelcome pest.
