Home›Mollusks›Everyday Group›Legumes (Fabales)GroupLegumes (Fabales)This group gathers Flowering Plants subcategory members belonging to the order Fabales, overwhelmingly the pea and bean family Fabaceae (Leguminosae), the third-largest family of flowering plants and, thanks to a symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia bacteria housed in root nodules, among the most ecologically and agriculturally important. It spans towering rainforest trees, spiny shrubs such as gorse and the invasive kudzu vine, and the herbaceous food crops that feed much of the world, peas, lentils, soybeans and peanuts among them, together with forage and cover crops like clover and alfalfa and ornamental climbers such as wisteria and the jade vine. The five-petaled, often irregular pea-type flower, frequently with a broad banner petal and two smaller wing petals enclosing a keel, is the visual signature shared across this otherwise very diverse family, along with the characteristic pod, or legume, that gives the order its common name.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedSeed-Bearing 2Browse ByAll Legumes (Fabales)Legumes (Fabales)26 entriesLegumes (Fabales)Filter Results26 entriesCommon GroupAllLegumes (Fabales) (26)TaxonomyAllAcacia (2)Arachis (1)Cicer (1)Fabaceae (11)Glycine (1)Lathyrus (1)Medicago (1)Phaseolus (1)Trifolium (3)Vicia (1)HabitatAllDesert (2)Conservation StatusAllEndangered (1)Extinct in the Wild (1)Least Concern (8)Near Threatened (1)Vulnerable (1)EcosystemAllFynbos (1)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (19)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (1)Marine (1)Terrestrial (12)ThreatsAllBiological Resource Use (1)Relationship to PeopleAllDomesticated (4)Farmed or Commercially Raised (9)Invasive or Introduced Species (4)Used in Traditional Medicine (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (18)Where It LivesAllAfghanistan (5)Albania (6)Algeria (10)Angola (5)Asia (1)Australia (6)Austria (6)Bahamas (2)Bangladesh (10)Beijing (1)Belarus (5)Belgium (7)Belize (1)Benin (1)Bolivia (6)Botswana (1)Brazil (3)Bulgaria (8)Burundi (1)Cambodia (1)Cameroon (4)Central African Republic (4)Chad (5)China (1)Colombia (10)Comoros (1)Costa Rica (5)Cuba (6)Cyprus (3)Democratic Republic of the Congo (1)Denmark (6)Djibouti (3)Dominican Republic (8)East Africa (1)Ecuador (7)Egypt (3)El Salvador (3)Eritrea (5)Eswatini (2)Ethiopia (10)Fiji (4)Finland (5)France (9)Fujian (1)Gabon (1)Georgia (6)Germany (9)Ghana (2)Greece (5)Guangdong (1)Guatemala (6)Guinea (3)Guyana (1)Haiti (7)Honduras (4)Hungary (5)Iceland (3)India (14)Indonesia (1)Iran (6)Iraq (8)Ireland (6)Italy (10)Jamaica (5)Japan (8)Kazakhstan (4)Kenya (6)Kuwait (1)Laos (1)Lesotho (1)Liberia (1)Libya (3)Madagascar (2)Malawi (1)Mali (3)Manchuria (3)Mauritania (2)Mauritius (1)Mongolia (2)Morocco (5)Mozambique (4)Myanmar (8)Namibia (1)Nepal (6)Netherlands (2)Nicaragua (2)Niger (1)Nigeria (4)North America (10)Norway (3)Oman (2)Pakistan (7)Palestine (3)Peru (2)Philippines (4)Poland (2)Portugal (4)Romania (2)Rwanda (3)Samoa (1)Saudi Arabia (2)Senegal (3)Seychelles (1)Sierra Leone (2)Somalia (1)South Africa (1)South America (1)Spain (5)Sri Lanka (7)Sweden (2)Switzerland (2)Syria (1)Taiwan (2)Tanzania (5)Thailand (3)Tibet (1)Togo (2)Tonga (1)Tunisia (4)Turkmenistan (2)Uganda (2)Ukraine (4)Uruguay (2)Uzbekistan (3)Vanuatu (1)Venezuela (1)Vietnam (2)Yemen (3)Zambia (2)Zimbabwe (3)BrowseCompareSelect all 26Acacia mathuataensisFlowering Plants1 linkAlfalfa (Medicago sativa)Flowering Plants1 linkAmherstia NobilisFlowering Plants1 linkBlack WattleFlowering Plants1 linkChickpea (Cicer arietinum)Flowering Plants1 linkCommon Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)Flowering Plants1 linkDalbergia melanoxylonFlowering Plants1 linkEnterolobium cyclocarpumFlowering Plants1 linkErythrina euodiphyllaFlowering Plants1 linkFenugreekFlowering Plants1 linkGarden Pea (Pisum sativum)Flowering Plants1 linkGorseFlowering Plants1 linkJade VineFlowering Plants1 linkKudzuFlowering Plants1 linkLathyrus japonicusFlowering Plants1 linkLentil (Lens culinaris)Flowering PlantsPeaFlowering Plants2 linksPeanut (Arachis hypogaea)Flowering Plants1 linkRed CloverFlowering Plants1 linkRooibosFlowering Plants2 linksSenna alexandrinaFlowering Plants1 linkSoybean (Glycine max)Flowering Plants1 linkTrifolium arvenseFlowering Plants1 linkVicia fabaFlowering Plants1 linkWhite CloverFlowering Plants1 linkWisteriaFlowering PlantsSources1.
