Grey-cushioned Grimmia

Grey-cushioned grimmia, Grimmia pulvinata, is a moss of the family Grimmiaceae that grows in small, dense, rounded cushions one to two centimeters tall, colored grey-green to orange-yellow, with narrow leaf tips that often carry a fine silvery sheen visible as a pale frost across the cushion's surface. Its oval capsules bend back down into the leaves when dry and extend upright when wet, and it is the most common species in its genus, colonizing rock, concrete, old mortar and tree bark in a nearly worldwide temperate distribution from sea level to nearly three thousand meters, especially common in Britain and western North America.
