Splachnum, known as dung moss or petticoat moss, is a genus of moss notable for relying on insects to disperse its spores. It typically grows on patches of dung or decaying animal matter, and its brightly colored, oddly shaped spore bearing structures attract flies that carry its spores to fresh dung in much the way a flower attracts a pollinator.
