This group gathers Fish subcategory members belonging to the order Cypriniformes, the carps, minnows and loaches, the largest order of freshwater fish worldwide and, unusually among fish, entirely without any marine representative. Its members share a toothless mouth, instead grinding food against a bony pad in the throat using a specialized set of pharyngeal teeth, and most are schooling fish of rivers, lakes and streams. It spans the common carp and its many cultivated varieties including the goldfish, the true minnows and the pikeminnows, larger predatory relatives of the ordinary minnow, the roach, a widespread European species, and the loaches, elongated bottom-dwelling fish often equipped with sensory barbels used to find food in murky or fast-moving water.
