Salvinia molesta, commonly known as giant salvinia, is a free-floating aquatic fern native to southeastern Brazil, notable for its long, broad fronds and bristly, waterproof surface, with a third modified root-like frond hanging beneath each floating pair. Accidentally introduced to lakes around the world, it has become especially invasive in southern Africa, where it is known as Kariba weed for infesting Lake Kariba on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, and it has caused significant eutrophication after its introduction to Caddo Lake in Texas.
