The tusk shell orders are the two orders of the molluscan class Scaphopoda, Dentaliida and Gadilida. Scaphopods are commonly called tusk shells, with approximately 900 species, all marine, found in regions around the world from shallow sub-littoral areas to waters 4570 m deep. They burrow in sediments from muds to medium-coarse gravel, and individuals in the Gadilida may burrow up to 30 cm in captivity, while many Dentaliida burrow with the concave side just below the substrate. GBIF counts about 640 descendant taxa in Dentaliida and about 411 in Gadilida.
