All Archaeal Phyla

Molecular sequences reveal three distinct groups within the Archaea, the phyla Euryarchaeota, Crenarchaeota and Korarchaeota. The Euryarchaeota are probably the best known and include many methane producers and salt-loving archaeans. The Crenarchaeota include the species that live at the highest temperatures of any known living things, though a wide variety have recently been found in soil and water at more moderate temperatures. The Korarchaeota were known only from their DNA sequences. Since the discovery that methanogens belong to the Archaea, many other groups have turned up in habitats such as the ocean surface, deep ocean muds, salt marshes, animal guts and oil reserves.
