Fungus Phyla

Fungus phyla, traditionally called divisions, are usually four: the Chytridiomycota or chytrids, the Zygomycota or bread molds, the Ascomycota, which are the yeasts and sac fungi, and the Basidiomycota, the club fungi. Placement in a division is based on the way the fungus reproduces sexually, and the shape and internal structure of the sporangia that make the spores are the most useful features for telling them apart. Two conventional groups are not formal taxa because they are polyphyletic, the Deuteromycota, or fungi imperfecti, which have lost sexual reproduction, and the lichens, which are a symbiosis of a fungus and an alga.
