Gardenia is a genus of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, subfamily Ixoroideae, tribe Gardenieae, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Madagascar, the Pacific Islands and Australia. The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus and John Ellis in honor of Alexander Garden, a Scottish naturalist; the type species is Gardenia jasminoides, first published by Ellis in 1761. As of July 2022, Plants of the World Online recognizes 128 species in the genus.
