Chamaeleonidae, the chameleons, is a family of highly specialized Old World lizards with about 200 described species as of 2015, distributed across roughly 11 genera in two subfamilies, Brookesiinae and Chamaeleoninae. They are known for color-changing skin, zygodactylous feet, prehensile tails, independently mobile eyes and projectile tongues used to catch insect prey. About half the species are restricted to Madagascar, with the rest across sub-Saharan Africa and scattered populations in northern Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East and South Asia, plus introduced populations in Hawaii and Florida.
