Aniliidae

Aniliidae is a monotypic snake family created for a single species, Anilius scytale, commonly called the false coral snake. It lives in tropical northern South America, ranging from southern and eastern Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana south through the Amazon Basin of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, and on Trinidad and Tobago. It is a burrowing, non venomous snake with a cylindrical body of uniform width, a very short tail, and bright red and black banding, its small eyes covered by large head scales. It bears live young rather than laying eggs and is often described as resembling the ancestral, lizard-like snake body plan.
