Varanidae

Varanidae, the monitor lizards or varanids, is a family of carnivorous and sometimes frugivorous lizards containing one living genus, Varanus, and several extinct relatives, within the suborder Anguimorpha. Varanus includes the Komodo dragon, the largest living lizard, along with the crocodile monitor, the savannah monitor and numerous Australian and Southeast Asian goannas. The family's closest living relatives are the earless monitor lizard and the Chinese crocodile lizard, and its oldest known fossils come from the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia.
