It spans the day-flying butterflies, among them the monarch, famous for its multi-generational migration across North America, the swallowtails, and the brightly patterned admirals and checkerspots, and the far more numerous moths, mostly nocturnal and often camouflaged at rest, ranging from the enormous silk moths such as the luna and atlas moths to agricultural pests such as the gypsy moth and codling moth. Nearly every member undergoes complete metamorphosis, passing through a caterpillar larval stage and a pupal or chrysalis stage before emerging as a winged adult.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Browse ByAll Butterflies And Moths (Lepidoptera)Butterflies And Moths (Lepidoptera)55 entriesButterflies And Moths (Lepidoptera)Filter Results55 entriesCommon GroupAllButterflies And Moths (Lepidoptera) (55)TaxonomyAllCrambidae (1)Danaus (1)Erebidae (4)Euphydryas (1)Geometridae (9)Heliconius (1)Lepidoptera (6)Lycaenidae (1)Noctuidae (4)Nymphalidae (3)Papilionidae (4)Pieridae (3)Saturniidae (5)Sphingidae (4)Tortricidae (1)Zygaenidae (1)HabitatAllBoreal Forest (1)Grassland (2)Tropical Rainforest (1)Wetlands (1)Conservation StatusAllEndangered (1)Extinct (1)Least Concern (6)Not Evaluated (1)EcosystemAllBorneo Rainforest (1)Cerrado (1)DietAllHerbivore (1)Insectivore (1)Parasitic (1)System (Realm)AllMarine (1)Terrestrial (33)ThreatsAllInvasive and Other Problematic Species, Genes and Diseases (1)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (7)Domesticated (2)Farmed or Commercially Raised (1)Hunted or Fished (1)Invasive or Introduced Species (3)Pollinator (2)Living or ExtinctAllYes (13)Where It LivesAllAfrica (2)Albania (7)Algeria (1)Andorra (7)Asia (1)Australia (1)Australia (6)Austria (7)Bahrain (1)Belarus (6)Belgium (25)Bhutan (1)Bosnia and Herzegovina (6)Brazil (3)Bulgaria (7)Burkina Faso (1)Canada (11)Chile (2)China (1)Colombia (3)Croatia (7)Cyprus (9)Czechia (7)Denmark (20)Ecuador (1)Estonia (6)Europe (11)Finland (6)France (10)Gambia (1)Georgia (1)Germany (7)Ghana (1)Greece (8)Guinea (1)Guinea-Bissau (1)Hungary (7)Iceland (2)India (2)Iraq (1)Ireland (8)Italy (7)Japan (3)Kazakhstan (1)Latvia (6)Liberia (1)Liechtenstein (6)Lithuania (5)Luxembourg (5)Madagascar (1)Maldives (1)Malta (3)Moldova (7)Mongolia (1)Montenegro (5)Nepal (1)Netherlands (5)Nigeria (1)North America (18)North Macedonia (6)Norway (16)Oman (1)Poland (4)Portugal (7)Romania (2)Russia (2)Saudi Arabia (1)Senegal (1)Serbia (2)Sierra Leone (1)Slovakia (3)Slovenia (2)South Africa (2)South America (1)Spain (9)Sri Lanka (1)Sudan (1)Sweden (13)Switzerland (8)Togo (1)Ukraine (2)United Kingdom (9)United States (16)BrowseCompareSelect all 55Acasis viretataInsects2 linksActias seleneInsects1 linkArchernis fulvalisInsects1 linkAtlas MothInsects3 linksBhutanitis ludlowiInsects1 linkBlue MorphoInsects2 linksCabbage WhiteInsectsCallopistria juventinaInsects1 linkCecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia)Insects1 linkCodling MothInsects1 linkColias erateInsects1 linkDanaus PlexippusInsects1 linkDapidodigma hymenInsects1 linkDeath's-head Hawkmoth (Acherontia)InsectsEuclidia triquetraInsects1 linkEupackardiaInsects1 linkGypsy MothInsects1 linkHemaris thysbeInsects1 linkHickory Tussock MothInsects1 linkHummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum)InsectsIdaea rusticataInsects1 linkIo MothInsects1 linkIsturgia limbariaInsects1 linkLatticed heathInsects2 linksLuna MothInsects1 linkMacaria alternataInsects1 linkMacaria brunneataInsects1 linkMelanargia lachesisInsects1 linkOld World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon)Insects1 linkOrgyia antiquaInsects1 linkOrthonama vittataInsects1 linkPainted LadyInsects1 linkPapilio aegeusInsects1 linkPapilio clytiaInsectsPapilio ulyssesInsects1 linkPaysandisia archonInsectsPeacock ButterflyInsects1 linkPieris brassicaeInsects1 linkPieris rapaeInsects1 linkPolyphemus MothInsects2 linksPseudosphinx tetrioInsects1 linkRed AdmiralInsects1 linkSchinia rivulosaInsects1 linkSilkwormInsects1 linkSmall dusty waveInsects1 linkSpodoptera lituraInsects1 linkTholera decimalisInsects1 linkTobacco HornwormInsects1 linkTomato Hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata)Insects1 linkTrichopteryx polycommataInsects1 linkVariable CheckerspotInsects1 linkWaxwormInsectsWild Silk MothInsects2 linksZebra LongwingInsects1 linkZygaena FaustaInsects2 linksSources1.
