Darwin's frog is a small South American frog, family Rhinodermatidae, first collected during Charles Darwin's voyage on HMS Beagle and formally described in 1841. In one of the most distinctive breeding strategies known among amphibians, the male scoops fertilized eggs into his vocal sac, where the tadpoles develop and eventually emerge as fully formed froglets. It survives today in fragmented forest habitat in Chile and adjoining Argentina and is classified as endangered.
