Huon Pine

Huon pine, Lagarostrobos franklinii, is a conifer of the family Podocarpaceae found only in the wet forests of western Tasmania, Australia, named for the Huon River in that region. It is exceptionally slow-growing and long-lived, with individual trees and clonal stands estimated at several thousand years old, and its naturally oily, rot-resistant timber made it prized historically for boatbuilding, leading to heavy exploitation that has left the species now protected within Tasmanian conservation reserves.
