Chorda filum

Seaweeds and Macroalgae

Chorda filum, known by common names including dead man's rope, sea lace and mermaid's tresses, is a species of brown algae in the genus Chorda, widespread in the temperate waters of the northern hemisphere. It grows long, unbranched, hollow, rope like fronds about 5 millimeters in diameter that can reach 8 meters in length, extending from a disc shaped holdfast at roughly 17 centimeters a month; the plant is annual and dies back in winter. It is particularly prevalent around Ireland, Great Britain, the Shetland Isles and the Isle of Man, and in 2025 the Danish company Dansk Tang successfully cultivated it from spores for the first time, opening the possibility of farming it in lower salinity waters than previously thought workable.
