Stoneworts, the Charales, are freshwater green algae in the charophytes, the group that also holds Spirogyra and the desmids. Charophytes are now known to be the algae most closely related to the Plantae, and they are paraphyletic, since some are closer to land plants than to other charophytes. Unlike other green algae they share with plants the phragmoplast method of cell division and an asymmetric arrangement of the sperm flagella, a trait that can be seen only in the Charales and Coleochaetales because the other orders produce no flagellated gametes.
