Serrated Wrack

Seaweeds and Macroalgae

Fucus serratus is a seaweed of the North Atlantic Ocean, known as toothed wrack, serrated wrack, or saw wrack. It is a robust, olive-brown alga that develops from a disc-shaped base, reaching up to 180 centimeters in length, with flat fronds about 2 centimeters wide that carry a distinctive serrated margin setting it apart from related species. It grows along the Atlantic coast of Europe from Svalbard to Portugal and in the Canary Islands, and was deliberately or accidentally carried to northeastern North America over 140 years ago, first documented at Pictou Harbour in the late 1860s, while its presence in Iceland and the Faroe Islands may date back roughly 1,000 years to Viking-era maritime activity.
